Balloon Science

When you inflate a balloon, it stores potential energy which is energy held by an object because of its position relative to other objects. When you let go of the inflated balloon, the potential energy is converted into kinetic energy, which is energy in motion. Most roller-coasters don't have engines. The use potential energy that is converted into kinetic energy-kind of like what is going to happen in this experiment.

Here is a book about Roller-coasters: Roller Coasters

Want to check out a experiment using some items you might have at home?

Watch this video to get the directions: Balloon Science

After watching the video, ask yourself these questions:

What do you notice about the size of the balloon during the first try?

What was different the second time?

What do you notice about the size of the balloon during the third try?

Make sure you get an adult's permission before you try this yourself. You simply blow up a balloon and tape it to a straw and LET GO! If you do try it, feel free to let me know how it went or any questions you might have using the STEAM Flipgrid: https://flipgrid.com/papenfus8794
